Global Growth and Social Media Engagement
The 2024 EKO Acropolis Rally saw a significant increase in its global visibility, achieving remarkable results in both television ratings and social media coverage.
Audience interest rose by 12% compared to 2023, with viewers from over 58 countries tuning in to watch the Greek WRC round. The nations with the highest viewership included Japan, Turkey, Romania, and, of course, Greece.
At a national level, Cosmote Sport 5 offered a substantial amount of coverage hours, while ERT achieved the highest viewership on Saturday, 7 September, with 570,000 viewers.
In addition to the national coverage, which proved vital to the rally's success in this sector, the local international coverage was also notable. This included TRT and SSport in Turkey, TVR 1 in Romania, and various channels in Japan, which boosted global interest.
Japan, in particular, stood out by recording the second-highest audience of the year, with 890,000 spectators.
Meanwhile, Turkey and Romania significantly boosted its popularity, with news bulletins and reports widely broadcast.
The international media, including the BBC, Daily Mail, and Le Figaro, covered the highlights of the EKO Acropolis Rally. The news of Thierry Neuville's victory and Sébastien Ogier's exit on the final special stage, which left him out of contention for victory dominated the headlines.
The response on social media has been equally remarkable. Video views on Facebook rose by 41% compared to 2023, with over 2.2 million videos viewed by the public. In total, social media posts achieved a reach of 22.8 million, whilst interactions with audiences surpassed all previous records.
The rally garnered global coverage, with over 1,000 news programmes reporting from various corners of the world.
The Alternate Minister for Sport, Giannis Vroutsis, stated:
“The EKO Acropolis Rally is part of our cultural heritage and a worthy timeless ambassador of our country to the ends of the world. This year, it has once again proved to be one of the most successful round of the FIA World Rally Championship, with a global television and online appeal.
The 5.1 million hours of coverage in exclusive broadcasts proves that interest in the event is growing, strengthening its position on the WRC world map and broadening its appeal to new markets and viewers.”
