The news about the secured position of EKO Acropolis Rally in the 2022 calendar of the World Rally Championship might have already become known from the announcements of the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis, but it was officially confirmed during the FIA World Motorsport Council meeting which was held yesterday, July 9, in Monte Carlo.
In the presence of the President of the International Federation, Jean Todt, the nine confirmed rounds of the 2022 Championship were announced, with the aim of facilitate their organizers with their planning.
As it is quite early to finalize the dates of each round in the calendar, the FIA decided only about the first two: Rally Monte Carlo (January 23, 2022) and Rally Sweden (February 27, 2022). The dates of the championship rounds of Portugal, Italy, Kenya, Japan, Spain, Estonia and of course of EKO Acropolis Rally, will be finalized in due time. Also, later in the year, we will know the four other countries that will also be included in the calendar.
Speaking about the above mentioned, Deputy Minister of Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, said: «FIA’s confirmation of our agreement with WRC Promoter for the EKO Acropolis Rally, which at September 9-12 returns to the World Championship after 8 whole years, is a confirmation of our credibility and a result of our efforts. The Acropolis Rally is a national matter, and we aspire to be the heart of the redevelopment of motorsport in our country. We also plan important side-events for the fans, always investing in road safety. I am optimistic that we will organize the best Acropolis Rally off all time, thus advertising Greece all around the globe. Our goal is to maintain our position in WRC’s calendar for years to come, after 2022.
