SEAJETS Acropolis Rally proved once more its fame as one of the toughest and most demanding international rallies. The hard stages of Fthiotida and Fokida were a difficult test for both cars and competitors and proved unpredictable in terms of final results, until the Finish Ramp at the National Trade Fair in Lamia.
Back-to-back European Champion Kajetan Kajetanowicz claimed his 2nd win at SEAJETS Acropolis Rally behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta R5, after his first victory in 2015. This result was not easy at all, as he had to make a comeback, after the problems he faced yesterday. Today he set fast times, while all his main opponents hit trouble. At first, it was the overnight leader Nasser Al-Attiyah who had a problem with the power steering of his Ford Fiesta R5 from the very first stage of the day (EKO Racing Eleftherohori 1) and lost time. The Qatari driver fell 3rd but his bad luck continued, as in the second pass from the same stage his power steering failed again at the same place and he was forced to retire after the completion of the stage. Meanwhile, Bruno Magalhaes who finished Leg 1 second overall, was also
unlucky from the beginning of the day. His Skoda Fabia R5 had a gearbox issue that wasn’t repaired even during midday service and thus, managed to finish 2nd overall, which was the biggest reward, moreover after all the problems of his opponents.
The battle for 3rd was also exciting! The Greek Socratis Tsolakidis provisionally climbed 3rd in his Skoda Fabia R5, before hitting a rock at the first pass from Special Stage SEAJETS Rengini 1, that damaged the steering of his car and led him out of contention for podium places. After that, Murat Bostanci in a Ford Fiesta R5 benefited from the retirement of Al-Attiyah, but the gap from George Philippedes and Gregorz Grzyb, both in Skoda Fabia R5, couldn’t be considered as safe.
All three entered the last stage battling for 3rd place, capable for the best. Finally, Gregorz Grzyb claimed the podium finish, a result which proved once more that the event ends at the ramp. Earlier, both the Turkish and the Greek driver went off and were forced to retire. All these changes promoted the young Cypriot Alexandros Tsouloftas to 4th place, in his debut behind the wheel of a Citroen DS3 R5, while Socratis Tsolakidis finally completed the Top-5. Italian Zelindo Melegari who won ERC2 category, finished 6th, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX. Turkish driver Bugra Banaz claimed top spot of ERC3 category, in a Ford Fiesta R2T.
The SEAJETS Acropolis Rally 2017 ended in a dramatic way and the Ceremonial Finish was held in front of many spectators at Lamia, the city that hosted the event. Tough, demanding and unpredictable until the end, proved once again its fame as one of the most classic Rallies of the world!
