Only a few hours remain until the start of the 1st Special Stage of the SEAJETS 2016 Acropolis Rally, as all 81 crews have passed the Ceremonial Start ramp, set at Leonidas’ monument in Thermopyles.
Local administration representatives have honored the participants with their presence, as well as many motorsport fans; the true protagonists of the Ceremony. Crews are about to start racing tomorrow morning on legendary special stages of the international rallying history.
The Ceremony was attended by Mr Costas Bakoyannis, Head of Central Greece region; vice Commissioner of Fthiotida, Mr Efthimios Karaiskos; Mayor of host City of Lamia, Mr. Nikos Stavrogiannis, and many more local officials, as well as representatives of the sponsors of the Rally.
After the Ceremonial Start, the rally cars have returned to the Lamia National Trade Fair area, where the Service Park is set up, to spend the night before the real action starts, tomorrow morning. Earlier today, engine roars have echoed on the mountains, during the Qualifying Stage for the ERC participants. Last year’s Acropolis winner and defending European Champion, Kajetan Kajetanowicz, was the fastest in his Ford Fiesta R5, followed by Alexey Lukyanuk in an identical car. Youngster Latvian, Ralfs Sirmacis, was third in his Skoda Fabia R5. Local hero Lambros Athanassoulas represents best Greek chance for yet another Acropolis Rally, but encountered a right rear wheel failure during the QS, leaving him on the seventh place. Nevertheless, he starts from scratch tomorrow, against the other ERC crews.
Tomorrow’s first leg consists of six Special Stages; the first one (SEAJETS New Gravia) starts at 10:08. Stay tuned!
